By BARRY FOX Keeping your ear to the ground is the key to a device proposed by Andrew Young of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales for making rail travel safer. The device could prevent crashes when a signal fails (British patent application 2 251 507). Young noticed that when a train approaches a station, the train is first heard through the rails. His idea is for trains to carry an acoustic sensor which trails a roller along the track. The roller picks up vibrations from the rail and the sensor digitally filters the signal to remove random noise. A monitoring circuit then listens for the sound of any train approaching on the same track. If this occurs,
